Unit Roles
Per pre-launch coverage the roster spans several distinct roles — understanding what each does and where it belongs is the foundation of efficient planning:
- 🛡️ Tanks / Frontline — high health, high defense, low damage; hold the front row and absorb hits while damage dealers work. A run without a reliable frontline collapses fast.
- ⚔️ Damage Dealers — your damage output; fragile but essential, protected behind a solid frontline they carry runs.
- ✨ Support / Buffers — activate synergies, grant protective or attack-speed buffs to adjacent allies (e.g. a support next to a tank can trigger a protective buff).
- 🔮 Trigger / Specialists — units whose value comes from adjacency triggers and position-dependent effects rather than raw stats.
How those roles behave once they are standing next to each other is the synergy system: 34 ability trigger conditions decide which of these units actually come online during a fight. Where you put them matters just as much — see Grid Placement for how the 3×3 board and its tile effects change the maths. If you would rather start from a worked example, Best Builds lists the units the free demo lets you practise with today, and the Beginner’s Guide walks through a first run from the first buy to the last candle.

Think in roles, not a tier list. There is no single “best unit” in Order Automatica — a board wins by filling the four roles above, and the developer’s own design principle is roles over raw power. A roster missing a control or sustain piece tends to fold late, once the ritual has scaled the enemies up, no matter how strong its damage dealers look on paper. That is also why a tier list written in launch week ages badly: the studio shipped balance hotfixes within days of release, so re-check any evaluation against the current patch (see Best Builds for the framework rather than a fixed ranking). Ready-made rosters built around these roles are collected on the Team Comps page.
Recruitment & Progression
Order Automatica blends a deckbuilder loop: each run you spend essence to recruit strange allies and draft units / abilities card-style, then place them on the grid. Between fights you collect forbidden relics that rewrite the run's rules and open new synergies. Win to unlock a growing roster of unique units; lose all your candles and the ritual resets — but roguelite meta-progression means every run teaches you new ways to bend the rules. The draft is only half the loop — the Indulgences and Curses you pick up along the way are what turn a pile of units into an actual build, and the game systems page covers the economy, candles and progression rules in one place.

Ability & Trigger Reference (from the Demo client)
Every unit ability in Order Automatica is assembled from a pool of 102 effect templates and 34 trigger conditions, recovered from the demo client's localization. Per-unit ability assignments were not yet decodable from the demo's MonoBehaviour config, so this is the system-level vocabulary; the exact unit-to-ability mapping publishes as tooling improves (no fabrication).
